'Just Jane': This is a story of survival and dedication. 'Just Jane', officially known as NX-611, is a Lancaster bomber. She was built for the final assault on Japan in 1945. Completed just before the war ended, she served in the French Naval Air Arm. Following this she went into storage for some years, finally returning to Britain in 1965, following which she became an occasional television star and for a while, was the only airworthy Lancaster in the world. Her flying career ended in 1972, when she was auctioned off. Through innumerable twists and turns of fate, she ended up as the gate guardian at RAF Scampton. In 1983, Fred and Harold Panton realised their dream and brought 'Just Jane' to East Kirkby airfield.Since then it has been a tale of dedication and unstinting effort on the part of the brothers and their team of dedicated helpers, who have brought this magnificent aircraft to her present condition and her proud owners who quietly say, yes, she could be made airworthy again. Always with a secret smile and a distant look.… (meer)
