Excerpt from The Gospel in Many TonguesThis little book presents to the eye specimens of the varied languages and characters in which the British and Foreign Bible Society promotes the translation, printing, or distribution of the Holy Scriptures in whole or in part. The idea was taken from samples of Acts 2. 8 in many languages and types, issued in 1855, or earlier, by Mr. W. M. Watts, to advertise the scope of his printing office in Crown Court. He granted the Society the use of his texts for its own purpose. Its edition of 1863 contained his verse in 91 languages and some 30 varieties of character. After a time the verse was changed to St. John 3. 16 in all cases in which that Gospel had been published. In others the passage quoted instead is specified.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
