Her Cormac Reilly series got me hooked on her writing. This is a stand alone book about a young woman, Nina and her boyfriend of four years, Simon. When Nina disappears, Simon claims his innocence and his wealthy parents pull out all the stops to protect him. While this story certainly has the overtones of the Gabby Pettito case, the author does an excellent job showing both sides of the case and putting together a story that I couldn't stop listening to. I certainly hope Dervla McTiernan has another new book almost ready because I can't wait!!! ( ) Nina and Simon, a young couple attending separate universities in Vermont, go away together for a week's holiday, but at the end of a week Simon returns alone. He says he left Nina alone at the holiday cabin, but concerns are raised when Nina does not contact her parents. Simon says they broke up on their last night together, but gives differing versions of why it happened. As Nina's parents become concerned the police become involved and the rumour mill begins. This plot has lots of twists, and the compelling story is told through a number of voices. Inside stories for both families are revealed for the reader. Dervla McTiernan, Australian/Irish, is certainly one to watch McTiernan involves the reader in seeking answers and justice and different points of view bring the story to life. She shows how quickly opinions and loyalties, if they exist, can pivot quickly. The strain on both families is palpable and how money and distance can seem to influence and deflect was also very well done. The story begins with Nina telling us that we already know her story. She mentions her relationship with her boyfriend, Simon, a boy she grew up with and then fell in love with when she was 16. He becomes controlling, and sadly, that goes too far when they go on vacation together. Nina's mom is concerned when Nina doesn't respond to her texts or calls, and when she doesn't return from the vacation, her concern deepens. However, Simon's parents are very wealthy, and wage a campaign against Nina's family to protect their son. Yet, Nina's parents decide to fight back. When the law doesn't help them, they realize that they must get justice for Nina in their own way. This is a powerful story of love, loss, and what a family will do for justice. Although I knew what happened to Nina, how her parents handled the situation was a surprise. I also liked how her younger sister, Grace, recognized Simon's faults and was able to stand up for herself. An interesting story and a warning to people in abusive situations - get out, before it is too late! I don't know that this one really felt like a thriller to me. I think it's because it was fairly clear what happened to Nina early on. It felt like it then just sort of became this story of Simon's family has money and can do whatever they want versus Nina's family who doesn't. We get a semi-focus on a social media element and how it impacts perceptions but it's not a central focus and sort of just fizzles when it could have been a lot more. I didn't feel very invested in this story or the characters which made it harder to enjoy. The various perspectives were nice to see how each person was reacting to what was happening. It also really helped to showcase just how far each parent was willing to go for their child. I think that was honestly the most interesting part of this story. The ending felt a bit rushed to me and an entire scene felt completely unneeded because it added nothing to the actual story in the long run. I think I really was just hoping for a bit more. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
"Nina and Simon are the perfect couple. Young, fun and deeply in love. Until they leave for a weekend at his family's cabin in Vermont, and only Simon comes home. What happened to Nina? Nobody knows. Simon's explanation about what happened in their last hours together doesn't add up. Nina's parents push the police for answers, and Simon's parents rush to protect him. They hire expensive lawyers and a PR firm that quickly ramps up a vicious, nothing-is-off-limits media campaign. Soon, facts are lost in a swirl of accusation and counter-accusation. Everyone chooses a side, and the story goes viral, fueled by armchair investigators and wild conspiracy theories and illustrated with pretty pictures taken from Nina's social media accounts. Journalists descend on their small Vermont town, followed by a few obsessive 'fans' family is under siege, but they never lose sight of the only thing that really matters -- finding their daughter. Out-gunned by Simon's wealthy, powerful family, Nina's parents recognize that if playing by the rules won't get them anywhere, it's time to break them."--Provided by publisher.
