This probably would have been very provocative in the late 1970s when it was written, but having been raised in the "Dan-Savage-sex on the interwebs" era I have to say the stories come off a bit quaint rather than thought provoking. That is not to say that they were not well written or didn't reflect the new ideas about sexuality and marriage and relationships. I just think The Woman Who Gave Birth to Rabbits by Emma Donoghue did a better job of that. But this book WAS written in 1978. McEwan can write, that is for sure. This was just a very odd application of that talent. Eash of these stories is quite unsettling in some way. The tales all have quite an explicit element. There isquite a bot of ambiguity here, at times you feel that you're looking at the characters through a windown of smokey glass. If you're of a sensitive disposition, you may find some of these rather upsetting. I can't say I reccomend this piece of his writing, but I finished it nonetheless. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

In one, a two-timing pornographer becomes the unwilling object in the fantasies of one of his victims.
