This historical work was originally published in three volumes from 1880 to 1886 by the famed British bookman and publisher, Bernard Quaritch. This catalogue quickly established itself as the premier bibliography in its field. Beautifully illustrated with hundreds of original woodcuts depicting portraits, printers' marks, topographical scenes, and foliated initials graced many of its thousand-plus pages. Unlike many of its unannotated predecessors, Bigmore and Wyman's analytical descriptions gave a unique and strong-willed voice. The original work contained one major drawback; it lacked a comprehensive index. This edition has corrected this oversight, indexing titles, subjects, and authors. The Compilers of this Bibliography of Printing, the first of its kind published in England, had been for some years engaged independently in the collection of materials for such a work as the present, when, by the good offices of Mr. BERNARD QUARITCH, of Piccadilly, they became acquainted and for the first time aware of their several labours and common intention, and thereupon agreed to combine their resources and pursue the task conjointly.

The name of the author of this book, published under the above initials, is stated by the authorities of the British Museum to be Rocheaux, a printseller of Paris.
In the full exposition of the scope and plan of the "Bibliography of Printing" which the compilers prefixed to the first volume, they ventured to say that had they "realised at the onset half that their task might demand of them, they would never have had the courage to attempt it."
