This book chronicles the Quaker movement in its liberal tradition, articulating principles and practices of this non-credible faith and its testimonies of nonviolence. It is a revised edition of Friends for 300 Years by Howard Brinton. Much of what Howard Brinton wrote in Friends for 300 Years (originally published in 1952) remains timeless and is unaltered in this updated version. However, in her notes, Margaret Hope Bacon takes account of recent scholarship, changes in language, and changes in the Religious Society of Friends itself. These chapters record the history and attempt to assess the value of Quaker principles and practices as they have evolved through three centuries. An effort is made to describe the essential nature of the religion of the Society of Friends through the successive stages of its development. A secondary aim is to consider the past, present, and future significance of the type of religion to which Quakerism belongs. This is the updated edition of Brinton’s classic overview of basic Quaker understandings, practices, and history. Topics covered include the Light within, meeting for worship, vocal ministry, reaching decisions, the meeting community, the meeting and the world, and the four periods of Quaker history geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
