A Young slave girl tells the story of her family's life working in the cotton fields. The story is told from her perspective in her voice. Reading it in the young girls' voice makes the reader feel as if they were her having the same experiences she was describing. I also like that it is told from a young girl's perspective because when used in a school it can help young children see how it was back then from an understandable perspective. I enjoyed reading this book bcause it was a lot different than the normal everyday children's picture book that I think of. The language used in this book was more of a broken English, as a slave might have spoken, because this story is about a slave family working all day picking cotton. It's told in the perspective of a child, and is surprisingly positive. The child is in awe of the hard work his dad does, and wants to be helpful. It shows a small window into the lives of slaves in America. I think more people should read more about this time in history. This story titled Working Cotton by Sherley Anna Williams, tells about a young girl and her family picking cotton. She shares her experience by starting the day early before the sun even comes up arriving to the field on buses. Soon as first sunlight the family split into rows, her older sisters can pick cotton by themselves but she’s not old enough so she has to help her mama, and daddy works alone. The only time they stop for a break was lunch where they shared water and ate. Other kids would be in the field also but rarely did they see the same people because they changed fields. I kind of got a poetic rhyme out the way she spoke and worded the story. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

It is a difficult experience, and as she tells the story of her family and those who work with them, there is a sense of pride for her family and how very hard they work. In particular, she speaks of her father in such loving terms that show a great deal of respect for the fact that he is able to prouduce so much for his hard work.
The artistry is beautfiful, and this Caldecott winning book allows the reader to feel the pride, the love of family and the strong bond they share.">
It is a hard life made special by the bonds and the routine of migrant life.
Highly Recommended.
