I may need to go reread the first two on this. It had flashes of brilliance, but there were some things going on that were really obvious to me and I got impatient with the characters. ( )

This is by far the weakest book in the trilogy. The whole book felt rushed to me and like I was being told the story rather than seeing it unfold. Each scene seemed kind of staged to get us to the next scene rather than flowing nicely. I'm not sure why this is as Lorna Freeman's writing is normally great. I still enjoyed where the story went (though some aspects were obvious) and as always the characters are interesting. Rabbit got to be a bit more grown up in this volume, which was also good. ( )

Sequel to 'Covenants' and 'The King's Own'. The first two books in the series are classics - the sort you re-read on an annual basis. This is lightweight and fun, but seems rather a hurried affair, lacking the polish of the first two books. There's less of the throwaway humour, little further character development, (with the exception of Ryson who reveals hidden talents and acquires an acquaintance with soap!) and the plot is rather muddled. There are pages which have obviously not been proof-read. Still, it's as good as most of the fantasy being published at the moment, and fans of Rabbit will be delighted at the chance to spend more time in his company. ( )
