This was a very good book, even though it was without footnotes and bibliography. It really tells the story of the British in India till 1857. The story of the 1857 Mutiny is a fantastic climax to the amazing story of the East India Company. It is a fantastic saga--the British in India--and one which is well worth the attention I have given it. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
The East India company - there has never been an enterprise like it. It ruled over nearly one-fifth of the world's population; possessed its own army and navy, its own civil service, even its own church; became the most powerful military force in Asia, and had a revenue greater than that of Britain. It was in Brian Gardener's words, "a government owned by businessmen, the shares in which were daily bought and sold." -- Book Jacket (inside flap). Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
