How do dreams come true? Two decades ago, before he was an internationally acclaimed author and teacher, Gay Hendricks didn't know. In fact, he didn't even know what his deepest desires were. Then, when he least expected it - at a cocktail party - a question prompted an epiphany. The opposite of the small talk he dreaded at such gatherings, the simple question of a fellow partygoer was big enough to alter the course of Hendricks's personal, professional, and spiritual life. Hendricks shares that catalyzing conversation here, turning it into a powerful, step-by-step process that anyone can use to clarify their dreams, overcome the obstacles that stand in their way, and experience their joyful fulfillment.… (meer)

Okay, I haven't written a review for ages, but I need to justify why this book gets 5 stars. There are many other books on a similar vein out there, and I've read a few.
5 Wishes is simple, it is not contrived, and each step is plainly made and easily followed. Reading it I can feel some of what he is saying flow over me, and I'm getting those occasional twinges of excitement which are all too rare as I become more cynical. Reading 5 wishes let me be innocent again, and ready to accept the changes into my life I need to make so when I'm asked the question at the beginning, I can say "Yes."
If you're in a rut, read this book. If you are not feeling satisfied with life, read this book. If you are not totally happy and connected with yourself, with the joy of living and with the rest of creation, you need to read this book.
If you've just read this review and think it is sappy, then you most definitely need to read this book! And get that rod out of your arse! ;-) ( )

I checked this out at a friend's recommendation. Overall, I wan't too impressed. The framing conceit of the conversation at a party didn't work for me, and I felt a little too much "how wonderful am I." And the last chapter or so, where the author "just happens" to be inspired to make a movie, and the star "just happens" to be such a deep spiritual person that he's willing to share his insights, made me roll my eyes at the heavy handed marketing.

That said, I found this useful: "[A]ny significan incompletion acts like a boulder in a river. The river has to flow around it to get where it wants to go. One or two boulders may only hinder the flow, but pile up a few more and you start to dam the river. It doesn't take long for that dammed river to overflow its banks and get diverted toward a completely different destination.

"The way to get the flow going in the right direction again is by completing any significant incompletion. The act of completing something, particularly if it has an emotional charge, is a remarkably pwerful way to increase your abundance of love, money, health, and anything else that's important to you." (p.44)

This rings intuitively true to me, and I'm trying to act on it. ( )
