This is an exceptional biography of one of the most interesting authors of the nineteenth century. His lives as journalist and fiction author were both succesful and rewarding to a point. Some of his short stories are classics of the form and he inspired subsequent authors who created great tales as well. It is unfortunate that many know him only for his "Devil's Dictionary" or his sudden disappearance at the end of his life. A very informative and readable biography of Ambrose 'Bitter' Bierce; soldier, journalist, columnist, writer, and professional cynic and curmudgeon. When he disappeared in 1913, Bierce left behind a plethora of enemies; time has allowed us to consider him more carefully, and Morris does a wonderful job of illuminating the life of this very complex man. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

We may never know what happened to him at the end. He probably did not end up in Mexico, according to the author. ( )
