Louise L. Hay, bestselling author, is an internationally known leader in the self-help field. Her key message is, "If we are willing to do the mental work, almost anything can be healed." The author has a great deal of experience and firsthand information to share about healing, including how she cured herself after being diagnosed with cancer. What we think about ourselves becomes the truth for us. I believe that everyone, myself included, is responsible for everything in our lives, the best and the worst. Every thought we think is creating our future. Each one of us creates our experiences by our thoughts and our feelings. The thoughts we think and the words we speak create our experiences.… (meer)

I dipped into this book some years ago, and reading it through now see I used some of the tools to change things. It came back to me again as a gift at Christmas, so I decided that was a sign to move forward again, and see if there is something else I can unblock.

I know some folk think of books like this as a bit 'woo woo', but the best of them, and I'd put this one in that category, can certainly help improve your life. I've learned to use affirmations to quiet that negative chatter in my head effectively, and to treat myself with the degree of compassion I offer to friends. That is big progress in my book.

You don't need to agree with everything in any book, but just finding one thing that works for you could change your life. ( )

It’s a decent book overall. The first time I read it The List seemed very reference-y and difficult, but it’s the most enduring part of the book for me; it’s the ultimate in personal responsibility.

The whole radical responsibility thing is more than enough to turn away the average denizen of this society, (you mean it’s not Hitler’s fault? But what about the youngsters?), and not a few people who say they like the book discard most of its ideas whenever they become relevant.

Filed under human behavior. Kids on the jungle gym. “Mommy, that one’s different! Make them conform, Mommy!” Oh no wait that’s when you’re thirty. When you’re little you just run at the bastard!

Of course, I’m not sure that what they used to call self-love is the answer to all your problems, even if stewing in self-loathing and self name-calling is not.

Don’t hate yourself, at least.

.... I’m sure it sounds like candy-floss to some people, but she’s assuming that you’re too irresponsible not to blame blame blame, criticize criticize criticize, and not even realize you’re doing it, (“Mommy I don’t have time to help you peel carrots; I have to build a time-machine so I can kill Hitler when he was still a young person! So would you and Daddy stop ruining my life! It’s bad enough when you stopped me from doing my algebra homework yesterday morning—if I had good parents I’d have a girlfriend-slave too!”), and that you’ll skim the contents, ignoring 98%, before going back to one of those linger-on-the-corpses cop dramas where killing people is essentially the only way of advancing the plot. Which you don’t really need; what you need are corpses and ads; fear/anger and greed.

So there’s eating candy floss, and there’s eating carpet cleaner. Don’t criticize, don’t hate yourself.

“But you criticize.” I delete books I don’t like; I don’t criticize them.

*sunglasses* And I’m funny.

Recommended by a friend when I was telling her a bit about the negative self-talk that goes on in my head. There comes a moment when you think: Hey, telling yourself nasty things about yourself is a poor strategy. It doesn't do you or anyone else any good -- can do a family harm even when you keep it all in your head. I tend to shy away from this type of book, but I'm open right now and have found it quite helpful, even if I remain skeptical of curing disease purely with attitude. I have come to think that everything we think and feel is out there, that secrets make themselves felt, and all the rest of it so it is worth having good habits of mind. **** ( )

When a book mentioned cancer is caused by negative thinking and the world is abundance with wealth, how much ratings would you give it? ( )
