Sagan (1934-1996) was hoogleraar in Astronomie en Ruimtewetenschap, auteur van de populair-wetenschappelijke TV-reeks 'Cosmos'. De wereldleiders zien een dergelijk contact eerder als een mogelijke vernietiging van het leven op aarde. Eleanor probeert hen over te halen het niet te zien als een bedreiging en biedt zich aan het bericht te decoderen. In het bericht staan instructies voor de bouw van een enorme en ingewikkelde machine.
Niemand op aarde begrijpt er iets van en velen beschouwen het als het Trojaanse paard - een vernietigingswapen, gebouwd op bevel van een buitenaardse intelligentie. Weer probeert Eleanor de stemming te keren om het misschien wel belangrijkste contact in de geschiedenis van de mensheid te leggen.
