Outer suburbia described in detail. Impending doom of Violet Town rail disaster. Background stories of the people living in the street combined into a well structured story - though I did wonder if they were ever going to get to the party with the walk down the road taking half the book. Not a hopeful book (but I know there is a sequel) (

Carroll has done a good job here of capturing the mood of Australia in the 1950s. But he's also done more than that - he's written about the relationships between the people in this story in a way that explores a truth which applies beyond that time, and even beyond Australia. Certainly, when Australian people of my vintage read this book they're likely to respond to it in a "I was there" kind of way. I'm really in the middle of Carroll's target demographic, so it's hard to judge how interesting this story would be for others. However, I did find that the people in the story are real characters with plenty of weaknesses and not many strengths. It's a gradually unfolding tragedy really, not just an historical image.
The only thing I don't like so much about Carroll's trilogy (of which I've only read two so far) is that there seems to be almost a didactic element...as if this was an Australian history & culture lesson. (

On this hot summer's night in the middle of last century, the old and the new, diesel and steam, town and country all collide - and nobody is left unaffected.
Nothing much seems to happen in this luminous depiction of suburban Australia– but in this one night, there is a seismic shift in the lives of the people we meet walking to a neighbourhood engagement party.
Carroll is without peer in shining a light on the everyday.
This is an elegant and resonant tale of change and the loss of innocence – and one which meant so much to me because it could easily have been my neighbours, my parents … and me. (

Eine 3-köpfige australische Familie in den 1950er-Jahren verlässt an einem Samstagabend ihr Haus in einem Vorort von Melbourne, um an einer Verlobungsparty in ihrer Straße teilzunehmen. Rita ist mit ihrem Leben unzufrieden: Ihr Ehemann ist Alkoholiker und schafft es nur mit Tabletten, seinen Beruf als Lokomotivführer weiter auszuüben. Außerdem fühlt sie sich in der beengten Kleinstadtatmosphäre ihres Viertels fehl am Platz. Ihr 12-jähriger Sohn möchte ein berühmter Kricketspieler werden, wünscht sich aber nichts mehr, als ein einziges Mal einen schönen Abend mit seinen Eltern erleben zu können. Während sie die Straße entlanggehen, werden in ihren Gedanken auch die anderen Straßenbewohner vorgestellt. Für viele wird der Abend unerwartete Veränderungen bringen. Ruhiger Roman über verlorene Hoffnungen, mit der Aufforderung, die kurzen Momente des Glücks zu genießen. Das 1. ins Deutsche übersetzte Buch, des 1949 in Melbourne geborenen australischen Englischlehrers, Theaterkritikers und freien Schriftstellers ist breit zu empfehlen
