As an amateur entomologist and critter collector, I reference this book a lot.
It also gives adequate advice for temporary housing of larger creatures, like frogs and newts. It specifies in the book that some of these setups are only meant for temporary housing, or for short-term observation before release. I appreciate that! ( )

We used this a lot when the children were small. They loved setting up environments for their "finds" from the yard. We always released the critters before they expired, so there were no sad stories. ( )

If you are age, say, 8-11, and have access to a pond or meadow, this book would be an excellent resource. It devotes a chapter to each critter (hydras, planarians, snails, various bugs, ... ): where to find them, how to collect them, what to feed them, interesting aspects of behavior to observe, with detailed illustrations of innards, notable features, and developmental stages. (It reminds me of a neighbor kid who had a room full of aquariums and terrariums and now works for the Smithsonian.) It was published nearly 40 years ago, so I wasn’t expecting much when I looked up the author, but turns out he is still actively engaged in science education, with a web site and speaking schedule.

This book is about "non-traditional" pets. The author describes fifteen different wild animals that can be kept as pets as long as their living environment is similar to the environment from which they came. In the book, he describes proper care techniques and how to enjoy these animals as pets.
