This story is a really fun read for beginning readers. It is loaded with fun pictures and tiny snidbits of information covering each page. Resembling that of a comic book or cartoon, the big easy to read words will instantly intrigue the reader. The story is split into small chapters, has modern age-appropriate lingo, and great humor, making it fun to read and easy to get through. ( )

Jon Scieszka did an interesting job with the placement of this book, Time Warp Trio: South Pole or Bust (an Egg). The story is primarily set in Antarctica, where the temperature is well below freezing and the three main characters were underprepared.
The book opens with a description of the three main characters and a key element to the story. Sam is the smartest of the three boys except that he panics in scary situations. Fred is constantly hungry and puts this before anything else. Joe is said to be an average kid who received The Book on his birthday.
The Book is the key element to the story. It allows the boys to travel through time. On this specific trip they head to the icy cold continent, Antarctica. Not only did they travel across the world, but they also went back to a time when the South Pole was reached for the first time, 1911.
They meet up with a group of explorers after they lost The Book. The head of the expedition is Captain Robert F. Scott. The group is on a journey to find the South Pole and emperor penguin eggs and return to England. If the eggs are found, they will be used to see if birds evolved from reptiles.
There are several missions taking place. The boys need to find The Book to get back home before they starve or freeze to death. The men on the expedition need to get to the South Pole and find eggs to take back to England. There are many struggles that both teams need to overcome.
Jon Scieszka has included in the back of the book an outline of what occurred during this trying time. The outline goes into more depth about Robert Scott, his enemy, and the expedition
This book is on the third level of the I Can Read series. It is geared toward children who are just beginning to read on their own. It also bridges the gap between children’s books and chapter books.
The majority of comments made in the book refer to observations of the area. The boys are in a new place and have many comments to make about it.
