Geweldig boek, in een adem uitgelezen. Atul Gawande beschrijft zijn ervaringen als assistent in opleiding (chirurgie). In zekere zin vergelijkbaar met de co-assistent van Anne Hermans, maar veel minder een roman en veel diepgaander. Als Atul geen chirurg was geworden, had hij wel filosoof kunnen zijn.
Wat vooral goed is, is dat hij niet zozeer anderen de spiegel voor houdt, maar vooral zichzelf en natuurlijk de chirurg i.h.a. Nogal confronterend vond ik het dat artsen-in-opleiding veelal door trial en error leren, maar ze `oefenen´ wel op echte patienten. Ook een eye-opener dat de meeste beslissingen niet worden genomen op basis van evidence, maar op basis van intuitie of goed geluk. Je realiseert je na het lezen van het boek dat beslissingen in dit vak vaak heel snel genomen moeten worden.
