Children’s book; personally signed by Sharon McGinley-Nally; she is a friend of ours This book did not win any awards. This folk tale is good for 1st and 2nd graders because it is a long story and the vocabulary is best for children in those 2 grades. This book is about a a couple who long for a child and on the first snowy day the husband makes a child out of snow. The child magically comes to life and he brings her to his wife back at his house. This little girl becomes a human some how and brings the couple great joy. She hangs out with the children of the town and they soon forget she is made out of snow because she is such a great friend to them. But when the weather starts getting warmer and the snow starts melting she becomes depressed and secludes herself from her friends and family. When she goes outside in the warm weather she vanishes. The people of the town look for her but she is no where to be found. The couple then realize that she is the granddaughter of grandfather frost in the woods. So they go into the woods in search of grandfather frost so they can get their daughter back. Once they reach grandfather frost he tells them that she belongs to him and that she can only come back to them when the first snow hits their town. The couple realizes that he is right and they anxiously wait for the first snow of the year so they can be reunited with their snow child. This book deals with magic, family, seasons and sharing. For the 1st graders and 2nd graders we can do this lesson the first day of December and we can write down what comes to mind when we think about seasons and snow. Then we can read the book together and once we are finished reading the book we can have centers relating to this book. We can make snow flakes/snow babies in one center, then we can have another one where they write a sentence or two about their family and they can draw a picture. And the last one will have them write about snow and they can attach their snow flake to their sentence about snow. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
