Preface: What is the Bible? We know that it contains interesting stories, exciting history, dramatic incidents, prophecies, wise teachings, prayers, songs, the life of Christ, accounts of the beginning of the Christian church, letters of the apostles, and other writings. But the Bible is something much more than this. In the Bible God has made himself known to us. Apart from the Bible we would not know who God is of what he requires of us. It is in the Bible that we discover that God has but one great eternal concern --man! Apart from the Bible we would not know that God sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Savior and to make us new men and women, bound together in a new fellowship through which he works today. In the Bible God makes his will and purpose in the world known to men. Thus we say that through the Bible God speaks to us.
The book "Men of Tomorrow" was written to help you to read the Bible with more interest and understanding and with the hope that God's Holy Spirit will guide you to hear God's word speaking to you. The author does not attempt to give a continuous story of the Bible. He has selected certain man used of God in a special way and brings them on the stage of our imaginations for a while and to dramatize the events surrounding them. As we read of these people and these events, we see God at work in his world, carrying forth his purposes, creating a new faith, a new people, and finally a new fellowship of those who call Jesus Christ Lord.
In these brief glimpses of particular events and men in the Bible, we shall see how God used them to bring about something completely new in the world. When you go to your Bible to read these same stories, you will find there much more than the author was able to include in this book. On the other hand, you will find somethings here that are not in your Bible, because the author had to fill in some background material here and there in order to picture the scene.
You will be reading about men who were no better or worse than most men; in fact, they were people much like you and me.
But God spoke to them. When they responded to him, things happened, and God's tomorrow began to take shape in their today. Because they were "fellow workmen for God" they were always ahead of their time.
God still speaks to men, calls upon them to take their places today in the tomorrow that he is creating. And as you respond to God when he speaks to you through the Bible, you too will become God's men of tomorrow. You will be part of that great company of God's workmen, some of whose stores are told in this book.
