People are always surprised the first time they meet Joseph Jamison. They expect that a man whose hobby is investigating UFO sightings will inevitably be some kind of nut. Instead, they encounter a quite conventional young computer engineer with a steady job, a house, a charming wife and, as this story begins, an imminent infant. Called out to check on the latest report of a UFO for his organization, the Committee for Analysis of Tropospheric and Celestial Happenings (CATCH), J.J. inadvertently comes across a murdered man in a parked car in the adjacent hospital parking lot. Then he learns that a teenager who a few years before had perpetrated a relatively harmless UFO hoax has been killed in an auto crash the same night the present sighting occurred. The sighting and the two violent deaths seem entirely coincidental, but soon J.J. begins to suspect that they are not. Subsequent events harden that suspicion into certainty. His own life is threatened more than once, he receives urgent phone calls from a mysterious woman, and the police, in the person of the turtle-like Sergeant Richard Chelon, are much too interested in his movements. Set in a midwestern city, this story's rising tension is spiced with humor and the delightful picture of a young couple about to have their first child. Its harrowing and almost incredible climax finds Jamison more concerned with an immediate problem of jungle animals than with finding a murderer; how he copes with both will have readers completely enthralled. - Dust jacket.… (meer)
