JG-6 John Reed was a survivor of the great days of muck-raking journalism, when the Media was not yet under the control of the big businesses, as it is today. (Media Elites! Baah!) His interest in a good story drew him into the Mexican Revolution that spawned Pancho Villa and put Francesco Madera in power in Mexico City, creating the "Permanent Revolution Party" that governed Mexico until the 1990's. This slim volume set the cliché vision of the Latin-American Revolution firmly into the American mind. It is also great fun to read! Well-written, a subjective journalist's view of a war in a foreign land told in poetic language. Some parts were over described and the book seemed to lag. The parts that stand out are his interviews with Villa, Carranza, and the times he is hanging out and relaxing with the rebels. I was surprised how casually the rebels approached war and the lack of regimentation among them. I understand that some parts of the book were embellished and chronology was moved around, despite that, the broad strokes of the book seem to ring true. Much more descriptive and poetic than Ten Days that Shook the World. It was an enjoyable read and a refreshing difference from the "objective" journalism of today. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
