You might think that after ten seasons on the Peabody Award-winning TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000, Mike Nelson has seen enough bad movies for one lifetime. As the guys at Cahiers du Cinema say, au contraire! Hollywood's spigot of stupidity shows no sign of slowing, and cheesy films continue to flood our multiplexes and gunk up our home entertainment centers at an alarming rate. This dire situation calls for a specialist. A professional. An expert in wading through motion pictures so vile that they aren't released; they escape. We need Mike Nelson! Hey, settle down there, pal--you got him! In more than sixty laugh-out-loud reviews and essays featuring his unique combination of erudite wit and shameless clowning, this screenscarred veteran takes us deep into the recesses of cinematic cheese. He examines legendary showbiz families like Culkin, Baldwin, and Estevez; uncovers an ancient quatrain in which Nostradamus foretells the coming of David Hasselhoff; makes the case for the Food Network and the Three Stooges; and skewers all kinds of movies, including Lost in Space, Twister, Anaconda, The Postman, Spring Break, My Best Friend's Wedding, The Bridges of Madison County, The Blair Witch Project, and many, many more. Here is a film critic for the rest of us: the outrageous, hilarious Mike Nelson.… (meer)

Talk about an unexpected pleasure! I’m not a big fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and when I first got a copy of Mike Nelson’s Movie Megacheese, I was nonplussed. That was until I opened the book up. Any one that calls the film Batman & Robin “the single worst thing we as human beings have ever produced in recorded history” is A-OK in my book. Nelson goes on to ravage many movies in this thoroughly entertaining movie guide. Though you have to wonder about a man who calls Road House “the single finest American film.” Laugh out loud funny, this may be the most entertaining film book you ever read. ( )

Michael J. Nelson was one of the brilliant and satirical writers/performers behind many seasons of the late and lamented Mystery Science Theater 3000 television series. MST3K spent two hours each week mercilessly mocking bad movies, most often science fiction, horror or "biker" flicks. But not just mocking...Nelson and his comrades were mocking badness in very intelligent ways. Their schtick was that while a (bad) movie was playing, tiny silhouettes of Mike and his two robot companions appeared at the bottom of your tv screen and commented on the film's dialog, sets, etc. as the film played out. During an average 2-hour movie, you'd get perhaps 200 or more zingers from Mike and the bots, and many of those zingers were intellectual and well-informed. MST3K ended in 1999, and Nelson followed it up with this amusing collection of movie reviews and commentaries, filled with his goofy, sarcastic sense of humor. Not all of the essays in this collection are simple movie reviews...he also goes off on riffs about trends, actors, etc. If you're a fan of MST3K, you'll enjoy this. If you enjoy making fun of bad movies, you'll want to take a look. And if you just like reading movie reviews with a sense of humor, this is definitely right up your alley.

I have a feeling that anyone who enjoyed Mike Nelson's work on Mystery Science Theater 3000 will enjoy this book.

A collection of Mike's essays on the topic of film, this book is not only entertaining, but oftimes laugh-out-loud funny. And although his comparisons may at times be absurd, you will often find yourself agreeing with him.

A must-have for fans of MST3K, and a must-read for film fanatics. Definitely an A+ production. ( )

Mike Nelson was the head writer and second host of one of my favorite cheesey comedy series, "Mystery Science Theater 3000" (MST3K), in which Mike and three robots, marooned in space with only bad movies for diversion, watch and poke sly fun at them. It was much like my college dorm at 3:00 AM. Now he has written a quite funny book of bad movie reviews, and while I'm a little put-off that I like a couple of them (I will not deign to tell you which - why let down my guard now?), his reviews are generally on target and chock-full of comic nuggets. Although he does occasionally confuse hilarity with absurdity. But generally, Mike Nelson walks the thin line without a hitch. ( )

Personally, I consider this to be one of the most laugh-out-loud funny books I've ever read, but perhaps that's just because it's related to something that really needs no introduction: bad movies. His novel and collection of essays weren't nearly as good as this, but still:

"I can only tell you that for me, not writing about bad movies is not an option. Or rather, not not writing about bad movies isn't not an option. I guess what I'm trying to say is that not failing to not not write about bad movies isn't not a lack of being an option."

The main problem is the lack of a decent index or table of contents; if you're looking to track down a review that you want to reread, you'll have to flip around a bit. ( )

This book may not be as ambitious or exhaustive as The Story of Philosophy, or even CorelDRAW 7 for Dummies. (Introduction)
I hate to start this thing by nitpicking, believe me, but the movie really should have been called Lava, not Volcano.
