When Little Red Riding Hood suddenly walks through the gate between this world and the lost Fable Homelands, she's welcomed as a miraculous survivor by nearly everyone-everyone except her old nemesis, Bigby Wolf, who smells spying and subversion more than survival. But will he be able to prove his case before disaster strikes? And how will it all affect Prince Charming's upstart campaign to become the new mayor of Fabletown?… (meer)

Lemme just say here, I had a theory in this book, based on one line, and it took until issue 50-something to prove I was right. And I deeply love that kind of storytelling honestly. I was so so so pleased about it. Even as I mostly drastically bored of the whole Marching Wooden Soliders, aside from the joke of the family at the window trying to figure out who they are.

Journalist number one, with the whole vampire thing, amused me. Charming, continuing to be an annoying, but also deciding to run for Mayor I was very out on my whole thought process of. Aside from a child wanting something to make everyone look at them again.

But "The Last Castle" was the first time Fables have me chills/goosebumps.

Another winner! This imaginative series is officially one of my favorites. ( )

The stories are getting somewhat better and I'm getting to care more about the main characters, but this is still not really grabbing me. ( )

Another tale and far more worldbuilding!

[b:Fables, Vol. 4: March of the Wooden Soldiers|21325|Fables, Vol. 4 March of the Wooden Soldiers|Bill Willingham|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327870401l/21325._SX50_.jpg|1330999] digs far more deeply into the backstory of the Fables universe, with a more connected prequel chapter that details the 'last ship out' of the homeland as the Adversary took over more and more land and the rest following the first incursion of their forces of what will surely be many of the years--culminating in the first Battle for Fabletown!

And maybe, just maybe, hints at who the Adversary might be... (not at all who I would have guessed!).

This one, far more than any of the previous three, feels like part of the overarching story. It really does change the stakes. Fables can die and the Adversary is coming. What does that mean for the Fables of Fabletown?

On top of that, some truely wonderful character moments as Snow White deals with pregnancy in a fantastic world, rivalaries both flaring up and set aside between characters that have had centuries to nurse them, and Prince Charming jockeying for position and change in the Fable world. For the good of all Fablekind? or just for himself? The answer is obvious... but maybe a bit of both?

Yet another fantastic tale of Fantasy. I'm really enjoying these stories.

Here be spoilers:

I do love the Fairy Tale language. The last gate, East of the Sun and West of the Moon. It doesn't mean anything, but this feels like exactly the sort of world where such a place might just exist.

Bovalunaris. The cow that jumped over the moon. Because of course.

Flycatcher/the Frog Prince is not a story I'm super familiar with, but it does make for an interesting story.

Plus of course the Magic Mirror. I'm a bit surprised it seems to be more classified as a magical artifact than a person, but c'est la vie.

With a capital T... oh that's a wonderfully subtle remark.

It's funny because she's still in Fable-land.

This literally made me laugh out loud. We have so many sayings based on Fables... so of course from time to time, they'll have to deal with origins.

That... is a very different art style for Pinocchio than in [b:Fables, Vol. 1: Legends in Exile|21326|Fables, Vol. 1 Legends in Exile|Bill Willingham|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1375392441l/21326._SY75_.jpg|1138855]. Much more blatent than the rest and I like it. It really does make the connection to the wooden soldiers obvious earlier.

So everyone else takes this to mean that Geppetto is captured and working for the Adversary... But that is not what this sounds like...

Holy hilarious stereotypes Batman. :D

WHA HOOOOOO comic book sounds!

Also, that's a frog riding a nearly-flying horse, dropping grenades. Because of course it is.

So maybe it's not all about belief and how many times your story has been told... We don't see much if any of thise fight, but it's still pretty cool to imagine. And honestly, I think better this way. ( )

This war story is for my MP Army buddies, Bill Heck, Mike Lyons and Joe Czuchra, partners in crime and fighting, and in crime-fighting. Veterans of the Cold War, they stood their posts on our side of the wall, ten years before the wall came down.
-- Bill Willingham
This book is dedicated to Mum, Dad, Claire, Jason and Rudy... for love and support always. It's also for Irma, my true love and source of inspiration. And finally, it's dedicated to the memory of William and Amy Breddy, my grandparents, in whose home I drew every page of this volume.

Perhaps not, in the old days, in the old lands. But you're a stranger here, in this small spot of earth, where I've had centuries to weave and knit every possible spell of advantage.
You've stumbled into my place of power, foolish woman.
