(see copy 1) This was the book I learned all of my "parlor songs" from in the 1950s and 1960s. I still consider it the best, although I have many other good ones. The historical notes for each song are informative, and the arrangements easy for amateurs without being simplistic. Trigger warning for the 21st century: the lyrics and subjects come from an earlier time, and no offense was intended by any composer. Sadly, the days of families gathering 'round the piano to sing are probably gone for good. This book could use revision if they ever come back. Some of the songs are pretty horrifying -- there's a reason why "At a Georgia Camp Meeting" only appears as an instrumental nowadays. But it provides a good historical look at the songs Americans have sung since before Independence. I had fun finding recordings of some of the more obscure songs. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
