Nicknamed Pine, the story is told in first person of the day he was born. In joyful tones, he describes how he was held up to the moon after his birth. Then he was brought home to be greeted and fussed over by those he loved. Told in almost an elegant simplicity, Debbi Chocolate incorporated old African American traditions with new ones. ( )

My favorite part of this book was the illustrations, so rich and vibrant. This book is about birth rituals and it's a simple book for that, but the pictures were so bright and colorful, very pleasing to the eye. ( )
