Cold Tangerines is a collection of stories that celebrate the extraordinary moments hidden in our everyday lives. It is about God, and about life, and about the thousands of daily ways in which an awareness of God changes and infuses everything. It is about spiritual life, and about all the things that we have called nonspiritual life that might be spiritual after all. It is the snapshots of a young woman making peace with herself and her life, and trying to craft a life that captures the energy and exuberance we long for in the midst of the fear and regret and envy we all carry with us. It is both a voice of challenge and song of comfort, calling us upward to the best possible life, and giving us room to breathe, to rest, to break down and break through. Cold Tangerines offers bright and varied glimpses of hope and redemption, in and among the heartbreak And boredom and broken glass.… (meer)

This slim read is full of moments I can relate to, but the essays do jump around quite a bit. It felt like a collection of unrelated newspaper columns.

“When we do the hard, intimate work of friendship, we bring a little more of the divine into daily life.”

“When you're (traveling) with someone else, you share each discovery, but when you are alone, you have to carry each experience with you like a secret, something you have to write on your heart, because there's no other way to preserve it.” ( )

I loved this book, which I read just a couple of chapters at a time. The author charts her life, in a very readable style, with total honesty. There are some odd jarring moments when I was aware that she is from a totally different culture, with a personality far removed from mine. But even those couldn't distract from the gentle wisdom and insights that are in every chapter, without being pushy or condescending at all.

This is the first of the author's books, written thirteen years ago, but it doesn't feel dated. Nor did it matter that I've read her later books already. I'm delighted to have managed to source this inexpensively second-hand (but in an as-new condition). I would recommend it to anyone looking for light reading that's basically personal anecdotes in fairly informal prose; yet with a surprising amount to think about.

I love Shauna Niequist's vulnerable writing, and I think this book is a good introduction to looking at life a certain way. Since each chapter focuses on a slightly different topic, I will say there were some I didn't like and some I did, but on the whole most of them were in the 4 or 5 star range. However, while reading this the first time I did get the feeling this book was missing SOMETHING, and having read her second book, Bittersweet, I'd say I'd recommend that book over this one. ( )
