I don't know how a layman would come to appreciate abstract mathematical ideas by reading these essays, but for those more familiar with math, such as myself, the characterizations seem a bit awkward. It's like the writer hasn't thought twice about his text, it's at times stoopid, even "sensational", with a weird religious vein. There are a few brighter parts, e.g. the essay on three-player game theory and the fact that new physics has used existing mathematics. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
This book is an endlessly fascinating journey through a mathematician's looking glass. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

Michael Guillen saw religious implications in some of the finds he presented, but that does not surprise me because, as the British physicist James Jeans remarked: "The universe appears to have been designed by a pure mathematician." I saw religious implications in Moore's Infinity, too, although I don't recall that he ever spelled them out.
This is a great read and one I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone who wants an easy-to-understand introduction to great mathematical ideas. ( )
