“Home on the Range: Cowboy Poetry” by Paul B. Janeczko is a brilliant collection of poetry that reflects and describes the life and times of cowboys from all walks of the Midwest. There are poems about every aspect of the life and activities of a cowboy. From barn cats to coyotes, the poems cover everything and anything that is involved with being a cowboy. The poems take the reader on trips from San Pedro to the dust filled cattle trails of the Midwest. The vivid imagery in the poems’ language takes the reader through the rugged and beautiful world of the cowboy as he travels from town to town or as he herds cattle on a ranch. The pictures, paired with the striking poetry, are a wonderful combination that brings to life the world of the cowboy. I really loved reading this book of poems since I have always wondered what it would be like to be a cowboy. These poems give a wonderful glimpse into the world of the cowboys. “Home on the Range: Cowboy Poetry” is a great collection of poems about the cowboy lifestyle and adventures that will engage young children especially, but readers of all ages will enjoy this book.
