lucien: A great modern take on the noir genre in comic form. Berry is successful at both weaving a solid noir tale and having some good fun with genre conventions.
Het boek mag dan een klassieke thriller heten, in vind het matig geschreven. Karikaturaal, beetje ongeloofwaardig verhaal... ik blijf het idee houden, 'ik zit in een geschreven verhaal.' Niet een moment verlies ik mij erin. Eenvoudige zinnen en dialoogjes. Spade liep naar de Cadillac en vroeg aan de chauffeur: "Heb je een zaklantaarn?" "Ja." Hij gaf hem aan Spade. "Kan ik u ergens mee helpen?"
Nergens een spoor van een metafoor, het tijdsbeeld van de dertiger jaren wordt slechts bepaald door het vele roken en de oude draaitelefoons. Dan is George Simenon een stuk sfeervoller, met even zo vele dooie.
Het kan zijn dat ik niet geboeid ben, omdat ik het boekje voor de tweede keer lees. Ik was vergeten dat ik het had, en kocht voor € 3,5 een andere uitvoering bij De Slegte. Maar aangezien ik de grote lijnen zelfs vergeten ben, moet ik aannemen dat het voor 30 jaren ook niet al teveel indruk op mij gemaakt heeft. ( )

‘Why shouldn’t you, if you’ve nothing to conceal?’
‘Everybody,’ Spade responded mildly, ‘has something to conceal.’
