Confined to a hospital bed, Scotland Yard's Inspector Grant reconsiders 500-year-old evidence and brilliantly arrives at a compelling new answer to one of the most intriguing mysteries in history-- who really murdered the young princes who were imprisoned in the Tower of London?

The Sunne in Splendour door Sharon Kay Penman (LisaMaria_C)
LisaMaria_C: For me The Daughter of Time and The Sunne in Splendour go hand in hand. The first is the classic mystery "solving" the mystery of the Two Princes in the Tower and the second a sympathetic biographical novel of Richard III which is well-researched and moving.… (meer)

The Murders of Richard III door Elizabeth Peters (Cynara)
Cynara: Both books are, broadly speaking, mysteries debunking the popular misconceptions around Richard III; Tey's book is entirely concerned with the subject, and Peters' does so as a sort of subplot, in addition to a more traditional mystery. I'd suggest reading Tey first, as her mystery has less to offer once you've read Peters.… (meer)

The Wench is Dead door Colin Dexter (Cynara)
Cynara: Two hospitalised detectives work through historical mysteries, investigating from their cots. Tey's is the more famous work, and will give you a good education on the ins and outs of the rehabilitation of Richard III, but to my mind, Dexter's book is better.

Richard III door William Shakespeare (bookwoman247)
bookwoman247: This is a mystery involving Richard III and the two princes in the tower, and seems to have garnered a bit of respect. It's a great read on its own, and would make a great companion read to Shakespeare's Richard III.

Het weeskind door Louis Bayard (bjappleg8)
bjappleg8: Both novels use detectives to explore historical mysteries surrounding princes banished to towers and whose fates can never be known for certain.

I appreciate Tey's fresh approach at mystery novels. She rejects romance pretty firmly, comes at the stories from different angles including ignoring her detective almost completely in one book and in this example, invaliding him. I thought I had read this book in my middle school tumble into British novels. But nope, what I was remembering was Ngaio Marsh's Death of a Fool. Ha!
This was thin but I romped through it quickly and am ready to watch BCumberbatch's Richard III series now! ( )

Inspector Grant is in hospital with a broken leg - and is bored - but his interest is piqued by one of the books given to him. So much so that he spends his time and that of his assistant researching the murder of The Princes in the Tower and of the reign of Richard III.
As Richard III is one of my favourite rulers, and I have spent time studing the era, I really enjoyed this book. ( )

Dammit. I just reviewed "Daughter of Time" by Josephine Tey, but goodreads deleted it when I attempted to post it. Readers might save their reviews to TextEdit or somewhere before posting them, then copy and paste when goodreads eats their reviews. So here we go, again:

Alan Grant of Scotland Yard is in hospital and decides to investigate the fate of two nephews of Richard III imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1483, whereupon they soon disappeared forever. At page 57, we are no closer to discovering their fate than we were at page 1. I give up, then. Second star is in respect of whatever bunch voted this a great detective novel. What do I know.

But we see in Wikipedia that Grant's solution is not that of historians. So I recommend Wikipedia for expert consensus and related history, related history of which Grant may have more (after page 57) than Wikipedia does. I wouldn't know. Wiki has more related history than I need. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princes_in_the_Tower

An autopsy of Richard III, killed in battle, is interesting. His remains were discovered in 2012 under a parking lot.

Archiv.org has Tey's book for free. Now to copy this to TextEdit.

Excellent! It has been called the best mystery novel ever written. Recommended. ( )

I tried this one in audio and it felt too convoluted. It was interesting enough, but too much information. I should try reading it instead.

You don't like to think of a man you've known and admired flung stripped and dangling across a pony like a dead animal.
A frisson of horror may go down one's spine at wholesale destruction but one's heart stays unmoved. A thousand people drowned in floods in China are news: a solitary child drowned in a pond is tragedy.
It was, moreover, the almost-respectable form of historical fiction which is merely history-with-conversation, so to speak. An imaginative biography rather than an imagined story.
