"Foreword" er skrevet af C. Gordon Bell, Vice President of Engineering ved Digital Equipment Corporation. Det hylder TEX som potentielt lige så epokegørende som Gutenberg.
"Preface" er skrevet af Knuth selv og handler om at han holdt 1978 Gibbs Lecture i anvendt matematik og benyttede lejligheden til at beskrive noget ikke helt trivielt matematik, som han har prøvet at anvende på problemer hentet fra typografi. Fx 'hvilke kurver er pænest' og 'tegn en pæn kurve gennem disse punkter'.
"Acknowledgements" handler om hvem der har støttet ham i at skrive bogens tre forskellige dele. Den første er hans Gibbs foredrag, den anden beskriver TEX og den tredje beskriver METAFONT. TEX kan behandle tekster og METAFONT kan lave bogstaver.

En anden af hans bøger "Selected Papers" beskriver lidt mere om metafont og hvordan diamantformede penne kan tegne pænere cirkler. ( )
