HTML:From #1 New York Times bestselling author Ann Rule, "America's best true-crime writer" (Kirkus Reviews), her unforgettable classic account of the horrifying murders in the Pacific Northwest and her shock when she discovered her friendâ??Ted Bundyâ??was not only a suspect but also one of the most prolific serial killers in American history.
Meeting in 1971 at a Seattle crisis clinic, Ann Rule and Ted Bundy developed a friendship and correspondence that would span the rest of his life. Rule had no idea that when they went their separate ways, their paths would cross again under shocking circumstances.

The Stranger Beside Me is Rule's compelling firsthand account of not just her relationship with Bundy, but also his lifeâ??from his complicated childhood to the media circus of his trials. Astonishing in its intimacy and with Rule's clear-eyed prose, you can't help but share in her growing horror at discovering that her friend was one of the most notorious American serial killers.

A Certain Type of Evil

" Any of us who has raised children know, as John F. Kennedy once said, to have a child is to give hostages to fate' "
Although I have read this book before, reading it again with it's updates still sends shivers upmy spine. Would I have been lured if approached by him?
His charm fooled so many.
This is important for young people to know. Be vigilant and never trust a stranger. Yet, Bundy wasn't a stranger to Ann Rule and it took decades for her to fully accept the depravity that lay underneath the charming facade.
If you are interested in knowing more about the victims, watch "Surviving Bundy", with interviews with some survivors ( )

Kind of lack luster. Doesn't really give any specific details about anything in particular. Also not for someone that isn't already well versed in Bundy's crimes.... that being said, if you are well versed then it doesn't bring anything new to the table... very meh over all. I feel like there could have been more details given on them working together or more into the investigations that Ann had access to later, its a very surface view book otherwise. ( )

I pretty much said all I needed to say about this book through the status updates I gave while reading it. It feels like it took forever to finish reading this book. While there were a few interesting parts, for the most part, the book just seemed to drag by. It got tiresome reading about her conflict over Bundy's guilt and the bits and pieces of her personal life. She came across as being too sympathetic toward Bundy and did not give nearly enough information about the victims. It ticked me off at one point in the book when she went to Florida and said that "Ted could never go home again." Well, neither could his victims - what about them? I love reading Ann Rule's books, but this one was a disappointment, because she just came across as a "Ted groupie" to me, except toward the very end when she finally stated her opinion on his guilt. I don’t know why it took me so long to read this book but I am going to guess the young me picked it up once and couldn’t get through it. This was a tough book. It is Rule’s first book and she becomes a much better writer later. This book was a slog. There were parts that were brilliantly written that I could not put down and others that were forgettable. I am glad I finally got through it but I will be reading another Rule soon to remind me that she is quite a good writer. ( )

A very enlightening read about a twisted and depraved man by someone who was actually close to him. ( )

And tortures him now more, the more he sees
Of pleasure not for him ordained: then soon
Fierce hat he recollects, and all his thoughts
Of mischief, gratulating, thus excites:
"Thoughts, whither have ye led me? with what sweet
Compulsion thus transported to forget
What hither bought us? hate, not love, nor hope
Of Paradise for Hell, hope here to taste
Of pleasure, but all pleasure to destroy,
Save what is in destroying; other joy,
To me is lost...."

I never expected to be writing about Theodore Robert Bundy once again.
No one glanced at the young man who walked out of the Trailways Bus Station in Tallahassee, Florida at dawn on Sunday, January 8, 1978.
