In my opinion, this was a good book because of the lesson I learned from it. Nancy Carlson pushes readers to think about what it feels like not to fit in or be accepted by your peers. Also, that we need to be accepting of everyone and include then no matter of their differences. The book shows this when Philip the new student in school is excluded from activities and ignored because he is different and is in a wheelchair. The main character Arnie is the popular kid who gets all the attention and makes fun of Philip until he gets injured and is limited in what he can do like Philip. This is when Arnie learns the struggles Philip has every day and sees that it is no fun to be made fun of. The two boys then become friends and start to hang out but when Arnie gets better Philip feels that he is left out again however this is not the case. Arnie invites Philip to come and play with him and the other students. The big picture this book gives is to accept everyone no matter how different they might be from you. This book also focuses on inclusion for students with disabilities which is something we need to teach children from a young age. ( )

Arnie and the new kid is a story about a bully who likes to make a disabled person feel bad about himself by challenging him to races and winning. One day during one of these races the bully gets injured and has a taste of what it is like to have a disability. The bully and Phillip resolves their differences after Arnie (the bully) realizes how unkind he has been.

I love this book and how the author was able to bring the Arnie to Phillip's level and show the audience that the differences were less than the similarities.

This book is great to use when discussing the differences of abilities everyone faces, and how we can be less like Arnie when we encounter others with different abilities. This book could also be a great way for students to discuss who in their own lives have different abilities and examples of things that they do just like everyone else. ( )

this book is about how some kids at school tease children with disability. then an accident at school happened that made the bully become temporary disable too, then he realized how hard it was to be disable then started to have compassion for others and made them feel confident enough to be part of the class

Summary:
This book tells of a new kid in school that was in a wheel chair named Phillip. Phillip was always picked on by Arnie who would challenge Phillip to races and tease Phillip about eating so slow. One day while picking on Phillip, Arnie fell down the stairs and broke his leg and hurt his arm. After this happened Phillip challenged Arnie to a race and even finished eating before him. They then became friends and hung out together even after Arnie healed.
Personal Reaction:
I thought this was a great book for kids because it tells them not to pick on people because they are different then you, are unable to do what you can do because you may one day be in their place.
Classroom Extension Ideas:
I would use this story as an example when I see students picking on another.
I would also try to have the children use crutches so that they can see how it would slow then up. ( )

The main idea of the story was to never judge someone by his or her appearance; the inside of a person describes them. “Boy I could use a wheel chair like you,” explains the book in just one sentence. Philip was a student in a wheelchair, and Arnie was a bully. The book had great detail describing the way Arnie hurt himself, trying to make fun of Philip. When Arnie ended up getting hurt, and using a wheel chair as well, he proved himself wrong. The pictures were very colorful and descriptive. The illustrations drew attention to the characters, because they were animals. The story was written in third person, using a lot of dialogue. I will be sure to use a book like this in my classroom because it is a great message for students, giving great examples and attracting them with the animal characters. ( )
