Summary: This book provides many poems and nursery rhymes that can be very educational for children. There are so many to choose from one that , I only read some nursery rhymes, and a poem called Melancholy Pig.
Personal reaction: Recommended for children who love to read poetry.
Classroom Extension Idea:
1. Read Melancholy Pig.
2. Have children dress up as the pig. ( )

Summary:
This is a collection of poems for all children to enjoy. Anything that a child could want out of poetry, it is in there.

Personal Reaction:
A great poetry book with a great variety of poems.

Classroom Extension:
1. My children can one at a time pick out their favorite poem and read it to the whole class.
2. We can write our very own poems.
3. We can pretend to have a poetry reading and snap instead of clap for one another after reading our poems we wrote!

The illustrations in this book really help the reader understand what is happening. The great thing about this book is, even though some of the language is outdated, there are short definitions after each poem to help the reader understand. While some of these poems have more difficult concepts, Emily Dickinson’s style is fluid, making her poems easy to read. While I do believe that these poems would be better received by third to fifth graders, I think that Dickinson is a poet for people of all ages. ( )

Summary: Small book yet it's really loaded with cute, witty, wonderful and humorous poems, mostly rhyming. Most would appeal to any child and to the adult reading it aloud to everyone. Has a few nice pictures as well to help promote the meaning of the book.

Personal Reaction: Just like most kiddos, my kids are all about making words rhyme, repeat, and sound goofy. They would laugh at you if you made a joke of of peas and carrots. Kids are so funny when they are young.

Extension Ideas: Having the kids sing what you are reading works well from my reflection assignment experiences. ( )

A collection of historical poetry, Gyo Fujikawa creates a book that displays illustrations of community; children playing with other children regardless of race and gender and even involving animals and natural wonders. From Emily Dickinson and Shakespeare to William Blake and Kate Greenway, Fujikawa constructed a book filled with beautiful, touching poetry. This is a wonderful collection of poetry for young children.
