The book was old and the pages were yellowed, but still I persevered! This was a historical romance and the book focused on that, and Lady Jane Grey was just a side story, but we did get to her beheading near the end of the book. The book focused on the romance of Cuthbert (a Knight) and Cicely, a fair maiden and eventually lady in waiting to Jane. There of course is the sinister Duke of Northumberland and the three giants: Og, Megog, and Gog. It had the requisite gaoler who loved to stretch people. This was a fun romp through Tudor England, although much liberty was taken with history. I did learn that English monarchs (not sure if they still do) spent 1-2 nights in nicer quarters in The Tower of London to meditate and prepare for being crowned or married. 448 pages Well I read it so you don't have to. This is a book to remind you that Walter Scott was highly skilled and George Eliot was a genius. Published very close to the time of the publishing of the "Three Musketeers" this is an architectural exercise with a thin plot line of conventional love story and a layer of the story of Lady Jane Grey. There are many of the memes of the Victorian stage and a very poor battle scene. It lasted for no apparent reason except the Jane Grey story is so sad. I really enjoyed this novel about the short reign, imprisonment and tragic death of Lady Jane Grey. The author has a very engaging and readable style and the novel is full of drama, action, history, great warm-hearted humour (especially in the form of the dwarf Xit and the three giants Gog, Og and Magog) and moments of horror and terror in the passages and torture chamber of the Tower. It is a novel of its time (1840) with an automatic assumption of the superiority of Protestantism, which cloys slightly. Great stuff. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
