The devastating Phryne Fisher is under fire again in her fourth mystery. A very young man with muddied hair, a pierced ear and a blue tattoo lies cradled in Phryne's arms. But sadly it's not another scene of glorious seduction - this time it's death. The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher, beautifully dressed in loose trousers, a cream silk shirt and a red-fox fur has just had her windscreen shot out inches in front of her divine nose. But worse is the fate of the pale young man lying on the road, his body hit by bullets, who draws his final blood-filled breath with Phryne at his side. Outraged by this brutal slaughter, Phryne promises to find out who is responsible. But Phryne doesn't yet know how deeply into the mire she'll have to go - bank robbery, tattoo parlours, pubs, spiritualist halls and the Anarchists. Along this path, Phryne meets Peter, a battle-scarred, sexy Slav, who offers much more to her than just information. But all thoughts of these delights flee from Phryne's mind when her beloved maid, Dot, disappears. There's nothing Phryne won't do to get her back safely.… (meer)

Love Kerry Greenwood's books,

BUT

Trigger warning: this book includes mentions of sexual assault. In fact, almost every book I have read by this author includes characters having been raped. ( )

At long last the final member of our regular cast has arrived! Constable Hugh Collins finally comes into the world of the Honorable Miss Phryne Fisher and, of course, Dot.

I remember thinking the connection between the two cases was a bit too convenient in the television episode based on this book, and now I see why. The two cases here are completely unrelated, but still equally important. There's also a little less malice in the second case, that of a missing girl. The danger feels more immediate here as well, possibly something to do with what they were allowed to do on television? Regardless, while I simply enjoy the episode, I love the novel on which it is based. The story has a much better flow here. ( )

Phyrne gets tangled up with anarchists when a young man is killed near the dock gates, and the murderers try to get her too, because she may have got a good look at them. They are no match for her, especially when she is outraged at being shot at, and at the loss of a beautiful young man, of which the world has too few as it is. Diverting, as always, but I still like the TV show better.

When someone takes a shot at Phryne as she’s driving past the dockyards, shattering her windscreen, she is annoyed; when she comes across a gunshot victim, a young man, and holds him as he lies dying on the docks, she is enraged. Her investigations lead her to a group of Latvian anarchists, who are far more dangerous than her usual foes. As if that’s not enough, a young girl has run away after her father refuses to accept that she has a calling to become a nun, but she is not to be found at the convent where she might be expected to flee….This is the fourth Phyrne Fisher novel and, perhaps just because I read the first three in the four or five days prior to reading this one, it came across as a bit repetitive and formulaic. Not that I didn’t still entirely enjoy Phryne and her companions, but perhaps I shouldn’t read each book back-to-back, especially when each one only takes a couple of hours to read! Still, while a little tired, an enjoyable read. ( )

PF is certainly a handful but her heart is well and truly in the right place especially with regards to her daughters and the less fortunate souls of 1920’s Melbourne. I had a chuckle at the idea of staying the night in Preston. Surely it would only be an hour-ish drive from St Kilda, all things considered. I love how protective Dot is of her mistress, even when she finds some of her behaviour shocking. I have to say with all the arty types in Brunswick- it hasn’t changed much. ( )
