Fiction. Mystery. HTML:

When a Manhattan psychiatrist is murdered, a retired detective returns to the job, in a thriller by the #1 New York Timesโ??bestselling "master of suspense" (The Washington Post).
On a rainy November night, Dr. Simon Ellerbee stares out the window of his Upper East Side psychiatry office, miserably wishing he could seek counseling for the problems in his seemingly perfect life. He hears the door buzzer and goes to answer it, but flinches when he sees his unexpected guest. Minutes later, he's dead, his skull crushed by repeated blows from a ball-peen hammer. Once the doctor was down, the killer turned over the body and smashed in Ellerbee's eyes.

With no leads and a case getting colder by the hour, the New York Police Department calls in former chief Edward Delaney. His search for the truth raises more questions than answers: Who had Ellerbee let into his office? Why were there two sets of wet footprints on the carpeting of the doctor's townhouse? What caused Ellerbee's odd personality transformation over the past year? And who murdered, then symbolically mutilated, the prominent Manhattan psychiatrist?… (meer)

Well above average crime novel. ( )

First line:
~ The November sky over Manhattan was chain mail, raveling into steely rain ~

This book is about a murdered New York psychiatrist, the ex-cop who must crack the case with his team and six suspects-the doctor's own patients.

Loved that opening line, actually beautifully written, but the book did not live up to it's promise. I have read a number of Lawrence Sanders books with the Archie McNally character and thoroughly enjoyed his humour and his writing style. So,I was looking forward to getting into this series.

Written in the 80's I found this book was also full of themes that I found offensive and politically incorrect. I have read other books written in those years (eg. Robert B. Parker's works) and did not find I had the same reaction.

This wasn't a terrible book, just not very exciting and / or suspenseful. I see from other reviews that most people consider this to be the weakest of the five Edward X. Delaney books so I will probably give another one a try.

Edward X. Delaney is a retired cop drawn into one last case: a New York psychiatrist is brutally murdered and there are six suspects - the psychiatrist's six patients. I have to say that I enjoyed this book. I used to read a lot of Lawrence Sanders but got out of the habit. Now, I'm back in the habit again and looking forward to reading more soon. I give it an A! My grandmother loved this author, and gave me this book years ago. I read it, and enjoyed it (I still remember a few things about it), but in general, these sorts of straight mysteries aren't my thing. A good book, though. ( )

Mr. Sanders resists the temptation to indulge the reader with vicarious thrills. This time his book is not a literary peep show. The result is a leaner thriller. The plodding of Edward X. Delaney becomes intriguing reportage...
