Well, it's really not. (Shocking, or a departure). No, it's not a horror novel, but the writing style is the same, and her protagonists are still two cute gay boys in New Orleans. This couple just happen to be chefs. Obviously Poppy Brite found the world of her husband (a chef) interesting - and it is. It's a really charming, fun book with a fascinating view into the world behind the dining room. Wouldn't mind reading the next in the series. It’s a sideshow to the love paean to restaurants and good cooking that forms the thrust of the book. One odd thing is that there is a dearth of female characters. The book does not pass the Bechdel test. There is no reason for this book to have been sold in Toronto’s Bakka-Phoenix science fiction and fantasy bookstore. There are no supernatural elements in it whatsoever. Bakka’s excuse for selling Christian Cameron’s Tyrant was that there was some shamanism in it. For Poppy Z. Brite’s Liquor, the excuse must be that the author had written some speculative fiction at some point in their career. Liquor’s a fun read. Pick it up.
