This is a collection of short stories, all taking place in my beloved California in the 1800s, during the gold rush. I am puzzled. They start off interesting and with humor, the settings and dialog are wonderful, but somehow, they fizzle at the end leaving me dissatisfied. I'm not sure whether it is simply the style of stories in those days, or if it is simply the author's style, but it didn't really please me. I will read the other Bret Harte book which I have, but won't feel the need to seek for any more. ( )
