Biography & Autobiography. Family & Relationships. Nonfiction. Humor (Nonfiction.) HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER â?¢ Laurie Notaro has an uncanny ability to attract insanityâ??and leave readers doubled over with laughter. Need proof? Check out The Idiot Girl and the Flaming Tantrum of Death and try not to bust a gut.
Join Notaro as she experiences the popular phenomenon of laser hair removal (because at least one of her chins should be stubble-free); bemoans the scourge of the Open Mouth Coughers on America's airplanes and in similarly congested areas; welcomes the newest ex-con (yay, a sex offender!) to her neighborhood; and watches, against her own better judgment, every Discovery Health Channel special on parasites and tapeworms that has ever airedâ??resulting in an overwhelming fear that a worm the size of a python will soon come a-knocking on her back door.
In Notaro's world, strangers are stranger than fiction. One must always check the hotel bathroom for hobo hairs and consciously remember not to stare at old men with giant man-boobies. And then there are the lessons she has learned the hard way: Though it may seem like a good idea, it's best not to hire a tweaked-out homeless guy to clean up your yard.
The Plain Dealer says that Laurie Notaro is "a scream, the freak-magnet of a girlfriend you can't wait to meet for a drink to hear her latest story." With The Idiot Girl and the Flaming Tantrum of Death, Notaro proves she's not only funny but resigned to the fact that you can't look bad ass in a Prius. Don't

This book was just not my cup of tea. I tried to like it but while there were moments that were laugh out loud funny, there were many that were not.

I can see where there is an audiance for this book. It just wasn't me. ( )

I finally finished this. Finally, as in, I started it in August and just finished it tonight. Not her best work, in my opinion. Any book that I can just walk away from for that long...not a fan. ( )

I quit reading this about half way through. My life is too short for this sort of narcissistic twaddle. The author takes a small thing and blows it way out of proportion, insisting the world revolve around her and her incidents. I know it is done for comic relief, but it really isn't either one. I nearly quit after the first chapter where she was mocking a family at a resort because they were overweight, suggesting that they were also idiots and morally corrupt, and they were ruining her dinner by sitting in range of her sight. It wasn't funny. ( )

I really thought this would be funnier and I was disappointed. ( )

Either I wasn't in the mood, or this collection of humorous essays just isn't as funny as her "Housebroken" collection.

Many of the encounters Notaro describes this time around feel just a bit mean-spirited as she describes fellow cruise passengers, vacationing bird-watchers, and pooping seagulls.

Highlights of the collection are "Ready or Not" and "A Kung-Fu Person, a Tollbooth, and a Swinging Bridge in Less Than Twenty-Four Hours" which, believe it or not, are about pets -- specifically, losing one, acquiring one, and socializing a puppy.

Notaro's self-deprecating humor is her trademark, but it can grow a bit wearisome when taken in too great a dose. ( )
