This is the sequel to Cornick's True Colours, featuring Annabella, who was the unpleasant younger sister to Alicia in the first book. Cornick does a good job of rehabilitating Annabella and giving her plausible motivations for her earlier behavior. Much of the first quarter of the book is devoted to that, so the romance takes a while to get going. But once it does the characters are likeable and suited as a couple. There is a subplot about Will, the hero, being accused of treason for actions he took while in the navy, and the characters from the first book play major roles here. Cornick still messes up the forms of address (which the editors should have caught), but I enjoyed the story, characters, and romance. It reminded me a bit of Jo Beverley's early trads. Living with her former husband's relatives was uncomfortable for the young widow Annabella St Auby, but then a meeting with Sir William Weston took her breath away. He made his interest in her very clear, and she was certainly drawn to him. But then Annabella began to wonder if Sir William was in pursuit of her self - or her legacy?
