John Stuart Mill was a celebrated English political economist and logician; born in London, May 20, 1806; died at Avignon, France, May 8, 1873. He was the son of James Mill, and until his fourteenth year was educated solely by his father. In 1821 he began the study of law, which he relinquished in 1823, to enter the examiner's office in the India House. In 1828 he was promoted to the position of assistant examiner, and from 1856 to the dissolution of the company he was at the head of the office. He became superintendent of the Westminster Review (1836-40); chief examiner of the India House (1856); member of parliament (1865).Among his most important works were: Logic (1843); Political Economy (1848); Essay on Liberty (1859); Utilitarianism (I 862); Examination of Sir William Hamilton's Philosophy (1865); Auguste Comte and Positivism (1865); On the Subjection of Women (1869); etc. His autobiography appeared in 1873.
