After four years of marriage, Jordan believes that he and his beloved Italian wife, Isabella, have found their happy ending. True, he's not exactly winning over Hollywood with his screenplays, and to make ends meet he's had to take a job teaching writing, but he's certain his big break is just around the corner. So when Isabella suddenly leaves him and returns to her native Rome, Jordan refuses to accept that their marriage is over. Raised on romantic comedies and fed a steady diet of Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, Jordan has always believed that there is a simple formula for love-and it follows the rhythm of the classic romantic comedy. Seizing on Isabella's jealous nature, Jordan decides that in order to get her back, he must date another woman. But since he can't imagine actually dating anyone else, he makes someone up. Her name is Naomi, and she's based on a very attractive, very French former student of Jordan's. To make their pretend relationship believable, Jordan "goes out" with Naomi in his imagination-providing her with dialogue, fleshing out her personality, even dressing her. All is going swimmingly-and the ruse seems to be working on Isabella-when Jordan realizes that Naomi has taken on a life of her own. She shows up everywhere, though only he can see her, and she seems to have a muselike agenda for the bewildered writer. Strangely, the phantom Naomi seems to provide the inspiration that Jordan's screenwriting has been missing for so long. But be careful what you wish for. Just when it looks as if Isabella may consider coming back, life with Naomi becomes even more bizarrely complicated, and soon Jordan is desperate to make her disappear. He's learning the hard way that once Pandora's box is opened, it's a bitch to close.… (meer)

Meh. Jordan Moore - transplanted NYer and teacher of Romance Writing for film (oddly, just like the author) is married to Isabella, an Italian artist who just left him. In order to get her back, he "imagines" a girlfriend to make his wife jealous, Naomi. What happens when she really appears? ( )

Billy Mernit's first novel "Imagine Me and You" begins with a strong premise. A writer dealing with his partner's absence is blocked with a deadline looming. We as readers buy the idea. As befits a screenwriter by trade, Mernit ably pushes us along the twists and turns of his novel with chapter titles that work as film chapters on a DVD. The story is enjoyable. The locations throughout Los Angeles are inviting. The characters, though, tend to hold me back from believing the world created by Billy's words. Somehow the setup is too apparent. Perhaps a bit too much Deus ex Machina and not enough mystery? A cool blast of Raymond Chandler's fog blowing in from the bay might add a bit more noir to Mernit's sunny creation. I look forward to Billy Mernit's next book. ( )

While the concept was promising, this book ended up being quite the disappointment. I gifted it to someone else in the hopes they would get more enjoyment out of it. ( )

The premise of this book sounds great as a film plot, but it's hard for me to actually sit through reading it. Maybe if I'm in a particularly romantic mood I'll try again. ( )

I was intrigued by the premise of this book and liked the general story idea. However, even from the start it was slow going for me. I kept hoping for something more consistent. Some of the details were touching but I was disappointed that I could not fully connect with the main character. Details about his life, his marriage, his career were explained but I didn't truly believe him or feel anything for him. In retrospect, I think there was too much going on in this book - too many secondary characters, relationships, storylines. Examples are his industry business friends and acquaintances. I would have preferred fewer of these supporting characters that were better developed. The women in the book were especially one-dimensional. I could not resonate with anyone. There wasn't enough momentum for me to really enjoy the story, although I wanted to! I enjoyed the writing style and the humor very much. It read like a screenplay - visual details, etc. It didn't read like a well-rounded book. ( )
