Then just days ago I couldn't put it down. ( ) Everyday we make a wardrobe decision when we put selected items on our bodies. We also spend a considerable amount of time selecting, or deselecting clothes. I picked this up to use as a template for creating my own clothes diary...those great dresses of the early fifties we wore to dances, my dress for success wardrobe of suits, now in my 70s wondering how to look dignified without looking my grandmothers. I read this book in one sitting. I am not a clothes horse or "into" fashion but Elizabeth Kendall has written an intimate examination of a "ficitonal" woman's life from the point of view of her clothes and it is quite exceptional. At first we are too uneducated to understand the voice of the clothes but we learn to accept it and then we become fascinated. This book gives voice to the everyday clothing choices we make and how they reflect our feelings at the moment. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Saddle shoes. Camp shorts. Girdles. Bell-bottoms. Each plays a significant role as we follow B., the wardrobe's owner, through her buttoned-up Midwestern childhood to the freedom of miniskirts, sundresses, and New York City. We watch as B. copes with the untimely death of her mother, makes a go of glamorous magazine work, and, after the inevitable false starts and fashion missteps, finally comes into her own.Part memoir, part fashion and cultural history of the last five decades, Autobiography of a Wardrobe is an exploration of the clothes each generation has embraced and the smallest details in which we are able to seek comfort and meaning.
