This is the story of a young man, Red Meyers, who finds himself returning home to Hideaway, Missouri, wounded in the last days of World War II in Europe. His hope was to come home to his girl, Bertie Moennig and spend the rest of his life loving her, but now that his wounded leg hasn't healed he feels like that and his war pain and memories are keeping him from being the man she deserves.
Bertie is in California working in a factory when she gets her call that her Dad has died back in Hideaway. She rushes home to discover that Red, the man she has always loved, already home and very distant and different from the man she once knew. Together though they will work to find out who killed her Dad and why.
I enjoyed getting to know everyone in this story. All the people seemed real and the small town of Hideaway is right in the Ozark mountains, where I have been many times. There was mystery and intrigue in this story, but more than that, there was a love between two people that just couldn't be broken. I was sorry to leave this town and these people when I closed the book. I am moving several generations later and beginning the Hideaway series, which will hopefully have some folks in it from this story. ( )

Something was wrong. The news hadn't reached California yet, but Bertie Moennig knew something had happened. She couldn't pinpoint when she'd decided she wasn't jumping to conclusions, but her instincts had never failed her. She would have to wait and see.
