As far as he has been able to learn, no work of the great Austrian dramatist has ever been edited either in this country or in England. This seems very strange The text is that contained in Volume IV of the fifth Cotta edition of Grillparzer's complete works in twenty volumes, prepared by August Sauer, Stuttgart, 1892, only a few changes being made in accordance with the revised Prussian rules of orthography. All references to the poet's writings are to the same edition. The editor of Sappho has carefully read and tried fully to digest the principal Grillparzer literature, and its influence shows itself in many paragraphs of the Introduction.
