"Boston beat cop Danny Coughlin longs to step out of the shadow of his father, a legendary police captain. But his resolve is put to the test when he attempts to infiltrate the bands of anarchists and radicals threatening the city. Caught up in a vortex of change, Danny becomes entangles with an Irish immigrant maid and makes the acquaintance of Luther Laurence, a black man on the lam after a murder in Tulsa. Touching on such historic events as the Spanish Influenza pandemic and the Boston Police Strike of 1919, the Given Day is Lehane at his finest" -- from container.… (meer)

Well written, with some interesting themes: race, rise of unions, love and betrayal, etc. Personally, I found the attempt to wind in a baseball story to be contrived and unnecessary. ( )

Lehane is another author whose writing for The Wire prompted me to check their novels out, and The Given Day is a huge, sprawling epic that feels more like a Wire season compared to George Pelecanos' episode-size novels, if that makes sense. This is historical fiction instead of detective fiction so the analogy isn't exact, but Lehane uses 1917 Boston, beset by war, disease, strikes, bombs, and riots, to explore some Wire-esque themes: race relations, labor struggles, police work, immigrant assimilation, filial piety, and the American soul. There's even some baseball thrown in, with Babe Ruth as one of a few famous cameos interacting with the main characters. The book's treatment of those themes is well and good, as far as insight goes, but Lehane's writing style kept the book from really connecting with me – every character, every dialogue, every plot twist is so transparently planned and inorganic that I stopped reading at about page 500 of 700. Obviously most books have their occasional moments of ex cathedra didacticism too, but I wasn't immersed at all here, just acutely conscious of Lehane's Takes on Big Themes filtered through his puppets the Noble Black Guy, the Evil Racist Cop, the Noble Irish Cop, etc. I'm sympathetic to what he was trying to do with the book, and it did have its moments, but he should have stuck to the "show, don't tell" rule more closely. This book ranks among the top ten I've read in the 67 years since I learned to read. Lehane expertly tells two parallel stories about two American families (one black and one white) during a momentous time in our history--1918-1920. Eventually, the stories overlap as the two protagonists meet and become friends. These stories occur in the midst of the Spanish flu, the end of World War I, massive cross-Atlantic immigration to our shores, and the tempestuous early days of the American labor movement. A cauldron of social and economic unrest and change.

In clear, forceful, and colorful prose, Lehane creates strong characters caught up in family, love, politics, crime, corruption, ambition, and the struggle to overcome prejudice and social mores of the day. A wonderful, edifying read. ( )

Read because I wanted to read Live By Night, and this is the first in that series - although having now read both #1 and #2, I realise that #2 could be read as a stand-alone.

The writing is better than I expected and I found myself quite engaged by this. ( )

Borrowed from Greg B. Just started, great writing. Greg says there's a bit in there about a quarantined ship in Boston Harbor that eventually unleashed the flu in that part of the US in 1918. My Grandmother died in that epidemic outside of Boston in Worcester. ( )

The robust historical background of strike and riot and fear of revolution, combined with a corny story in which everyone gets their prescribed comeuppance or reward, turns into an odd cross between Don DeLillo and Harold Robbins.

What happens when a city's police force goes on strike? Is bloody mayhem in the streets guaranteed, or will common sense and civilised behaviour prevail? The city in question is Boston in 1919, the police strike really happened and the answers are in The Given Day, a superb new historical novel by the Boston-born writer Dennis Lehane.

The Given Day is an audacious novel, more ambitious than anything Lehane -- the author of Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone -- has previously attempted ... which is saying something. The 700-page book isn't perfect but its flaws are easily forgiven, especially when Lehane is going to such unusual lengths to develop his characters and his plot.

“The Given Day” may not be the ecstatic “yes” its scope implies — it’s too long, and peopled by too many cartoonish villains — but it does represent a huge leap forward for Lehane.

Meticulously researched and rich in period detail, it pulls the reader so rapidly through its complex and interesting story that it's easy to lose sight of its shortcomings.
