This is a picture book retelling of one of Aesop's Fables written in simple verse. It has a methaphorical plot and could be used in an English course to teach about allegories. Additionally, it would be a good book to use in a leadership class to help students visualize and understand the importance of gentle persuasion as opposed to attempting to force a person to do something. Characters: Wind, sun Setting: Not specified Theme: Kindness effects more than severity. Summary: The wind and the sun are disputing which one of them is stronger. When they see a traveler, they agree to decide the one who causes him to take off his cloak will be the stronger. After blowing the hardest with all his might, the wind finally gives up in despair. On the other hand, the sun shines his glory upon the traveler who takes off his cloak, succumbing to the hot weather. Review: By and large, one of the advantages of fables is that it teaches deep, meaningful life lessons through short stories, given that it is like expanded proverbs. This fable reminds me of balanced employment of carrot and stick approach, positive and negative reinforcements. As an educator, I feel that positive reinforcements can leave deeper effects upon students than negative reinforcements and this fable reaffirmed my such belief. Also, I enjoyed the illustrations since they themselves told the stories as well. They reflected the symbols and characteristics of the sun and the wind in the drawings. The sun and the wind test their strength by seeing which of them can cause a man to remove his coat, demonstrating the value of using gentle persuasion rather than force as a means of achieving a goal. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
