Lewis spent a good portion of each day corresponding with people via handwritten letters. Over his lifetime he wrote thousands of letters in which he offered his friends and acquaintances advice on the Christian life, giving away a bit of himself to each of these correspondents as he signed his notes with a heartfelt and familiar, "yours, Jack. Yours, Jack features the best inspirational readings and sage counsel culled from C. S. Lewis's letters, offering an accessible look at this great author's personal vision for the spiritual life. This book is a compilation of letters Lewis wrote to various friends and family. I found them SO interesting and insightful. I got this book from my library, and even though I had it for a month (or two), I just couldn't finish it. Not because I didn't LOVE it though! I absolutely did! It's just one of those books that you have to chew on--read a little at a time, chew on it, read a little more, chew on it, etc. I would love to buy it so I can do just that. :) If you are a Lewis fan, (or even if you're not) I highly recommend this book. A terrific read. I have read much of C. S. Lewis' work, and so when I saw this I felt compelled to read just that little bit more. My initial thoughts, in fact, were that this could be a very dry read. I soon found myself immersed in these pages, as Lewis had a thriving correspondence with a broad range of friends and fans, from close confidants to little children who had read his Narnian Chronicles. I felt challenged, refreshed, and inspired. Highly recommended.
Apparently this Oxford don and Cambridge professor is going to be around for a long time; he calls himself a dinosaur but he seems to speak to people where they are. C.S. Lewis, perhaps more than any other twentieth-century writer, forced those who listened to him and read his works to come to terms with their own philosophical presuppositions. The point about reading C.S. Lewis is that he makes you sure, whatever you believe, that religion accepted or rejected means something extremely serious, demanding the entire energy of the mind. If wit and wisdom, style and scholarship are requisites to passage through the pearly gates, Mr. Lewis will be among the angels. Lewis's writing takes on a life of its own, as the more it is read, the more insight the reader gains in to a mind unhampered by either style or doctrine.
