This book describes researches carried out among the Tswana of southern Africa, in communities representing varying degrees of exposure to a colonial political economy. The book is a philosophical meditation as much as it is a report of the author's observations. During the years between the two stages of the research, the author wrestled with a familiar intellectual dilemma: how does one reconcile the freedom and creativity of thought and language with the material determinism of society and history? Or, in another formulation how does one reconcile consciousness, looked on as a structure that can comprehend pure possibility, with the deterministic, probabilistic, and random processes of culture and evolution?
